Phi Gamm Pledge Days 1959-1961
There were both fond and bitter memories of Phi Gamm during the pledge and the brotherhood period.  This is in support of change within the fraternity and reflects the history of 60's time.

The pledge process from that time  exposed many of the human strengths and weaknesses of the yet to be adult college kids. The situation has changed and many of these experiences are not tolerated.

Events: As a pledge the "wakeup duty" was jokingly used to expose the risks of contact or physical reactions by some brothers to awaken.
The hell week caused the pledge class events you we today would not imagine. The brothers use of 4 foot pledge paddles was a brutal risky way of defining hell week treatment. The hand and knee Alpha Fire drills to put out fires using "alum etc mix"  and other liquids by mouth. The tennis matches using paddles and pledges as balls in a large room. The forced eating of raw eggs, cold beans and hot and other sauces. The exercise drills out side with chewing tobacco and no spitting allowed. The wearing of hemp bags under your clothing while going to class. Theses all are reminders of why we have found less alumni loyalty since some do not hold these older brothers in high respect. Today it seems stupid but then it was common. The paddle use was the most dangerous of these sports.

The Fraternity had so many Good Events like Party room singing, card playing social get together, parades and football through which Friendships were made.

There is no reason to use the bad events like above since they never build any loyalty.
